Understanding what the buffs do that you get by clicking on the portal, and understanding what the vortex does, is key to answering the question.

1) If you have Light buff, you are immune to Light damage, and do double damage to Darkbane.
2) If you have Dark buff, you are immune to Dark damage, and to double damage to Lightbane.

3) Light Vortex does massive unavoidable Light damage
4) Dark Vortex does massive unavoidable Dark damage

5) If everyone (except Dark Tank) has Light buff during Light Vortex, no one (except Dark Tank) takes damage from it.
6) If everyone (except Light Tank) has Dark buff during Dark Vortex, no one (except Light Tank) takes damage from it.

The conclusion is that if you are of the opposite color as the vortex currently being prepared, you need to switch colors for 6 seconds.
