A moonkin guide to decent DPS (should you ever spec moonkin for a heroic or a dps spot)
Content I. Talents II. Glyphs III. Gemming IV. Professions / Enchants V. Rotations / Consumables I. Talents Here's a quick run through of the spec im currently using Wowhead Talent Calculator Moonglow : One of our worse Mana regen talents. Moonkins in a 25 man raid situation or in a well buffed 10man will never need mana, save their innervate in rare AoE spamming occasions. Nature's Splendor is both a good Mana regen and DPS talent, making your refreshing dots happen less, making your wrath-starfire spamming happen more. Balance of Power : In rare RARE RARE occasions when you have way WAY too much hit, you can take points out of this talent. its WAY BETTER though to move around your gear, evne downgrad in itemlevel to get closer to hit cap. 1 point = about 53 hit rating. Improved Faerie Fire : Should always spec into this, its basicaly 3% free hit, 3% free crit. Best thing about it : You get 3% hit from shadow priests' misery, and 3% crit from any faerie fire (incluiding Feral Faerie fire) Conclusion : in a raid with a spriest and a druid tank / cat, you dont even have to cast it to get the bonus. Typhoon: I personnaly use this talent almost NEVER unless i dont have to refresh dots and i still have to move. 1 typhoon is better than nothing. Its a good interrupt on Faction champion fight as well, if you dont glyph for the no knockback. Its a good damage maker on heroic Anub with adds around (glyph for it or your tanks iwll hate the knocking back off the ice patches). Its an optional talent though. Probably better off putting it into Gale winds or even Owlkin frenzy if you really dont want Typhoon on your bar. Eclipse: the love-hate relationship with moonkin DPS. You'll love the chain eclipse procs. You'll hate the extra long waits between unlucky procs. Key to our dps though. Starfall: Kinda splashy, gotta be careful about it. Be intelligent about ti too though, try to save it if you know some adds will show up. But ocoldown is pretty short. General rule, click it on cooldown. Resto Tree : improved mark of the wild will give you 2% stat and better buffs to your raid, pretty good for 2 points. The spellcasting knockback protection is useless, on the rare occasions you take damage you pop barkskin and no knockback. Celestial Focus gives you the protection you need on the long casts / channels. Furor : 10% intellect ? why not. extra SP, extra mana. Intensity : You dont really need the mana regen. But the 1 point gives you a good mana regen basis to survive the intense fights. Omen of clarity : Best Mana regen talent, with a 10 ppm (last i checked) and might just save you 2000ish mana when proccing on Hurricane spam. Master shapeshifter : 4% more spellpower is awesome, moonkins want as much spellpower as possible. II. Glyphs Glyph of Starfire, of Moonfire, of Insect Swarm are the best three major glyphs for raiding. Starfire and moonfire have a great synergy, making Moonfire a powerful dot (extremly potent with the 2piece of T9 giving it a chance to crit) Both insect swarm and moonfire will be about 7-10% of your total dps, Starfire being about 40% and Wrath about 40% (depending on procs and stuff) Situational glyphs : Starfall : a 1 min cooldown on an aoe fight might be a great DPS increase. i would replace the insect swarm. innervate : bad mana? healers wanting it? you still want your share? tehre it is. Pretty useful on 5man dungeons or 10m if you dont have a special offspec. Glyph of Monsoon : No knockback on typhoon is a great glyph to have, and the 8% less mana is also a good thing, but you might want the knockback for a few fights. Carry one around just in case. III. Gemming Gems should always be Spellpower. Spellpower, Spellpower Spellpower Quick statweight for Moonkins : HIT (before the 236 cap with a draenei, 245 without) > HASTE (before the 401 haste softcap) > SPELLPOWER > CRIT (before the softcap -- cant remember the exact value but its basicaly achieving 100% crit when lunar eclipse procs, with full raid buffs (faerie fire, scorch, heart of the crusader, etc.)) > HASTE > CRIT > SPIRIT > INTELLECT. You should basicaly look for Spellpower-haste-crit Gear. If you have alot of haste go for Spirit-crit gear. Get hit capped asap. lemme repeat that : Get hit capped ASAP. Thank you. Meta : Chaotic Skyflare is our best dps Meta. Dont bother on socket bonuses unless its easily attained +7 spellpower, Or +9 spellpower. BLUE SOCKETS: Purified Dreadstone (+12 SP +10 Spirit) YELLOW SOCKETS : Reckless or Potent Ametrine, baste on which stat you need most. Veiled if you need a few hit points. RED : Armorpen. NOT. Runed Cardinal Ruby (+23 SP) is what you definitely want. Runed Dragon's Eye of course if youre a Jewelcrafter. IV. Professions / Enchanting for raiding purpose, best professions for amoonkin would arguably be Tailoring (lightweave proc) and Engineering (hyperspeed accelerators). You get to use the haste buff during lunar eclipses, you might get to cast 1 more starfire under the buff, which is a good dps buff. With lightweave proc on, you do more burst damage, good to have up when any eclipse is up, or right before treants - starfall cast. Jewelcrafting is a great profession. Pretty much all professions give the same buffs. Nevertheless, Gathering professions tend to be of lower value. I personnaly use Engineering / Jewelcrafting. Enchants are simple, get Spellpower everywhere, +10 stats on chest, +run speed / stam on boots if you have allt he hit you need from gear, if not get icewalker. I use Nitro boosts from engineering and i find it extremely great for the +Crit and the run speed increase. Moonkin dps is pretty much null when moving so the less you move the better. V. Rotation / Consumables Moonkins have simple rotations. 1. Get faerie fire on your target if you need to 2. Put up your dots. Starfall as well. 3. Start casting either wrath or starfire. as soon as the eclipse procs, switch spells. Spam that spell until you see the next eclipse proc. 4. KEEP -- DOTS -- UP -- AS -- MUCH -- AS -- POSSIBLE. This is the key to moonkin dps. Low dot uptime = low dps. high dot uptime = high dps. Refresh dots even in eclipses. Moonfire is your priority cause of the Crit and the iLVL 245 idol. 5. Popping treants RIGHT before heroism = awesome dps increase. You should see if you can pop them twice in a fight, once at the start and once right before heroism. Use Frost Wyrm flask. Potion of speed when entering heroism or a lunar eclipse, Wild magic when entering a solar eclipse. any questions, hit me up in game Balourd or Mim. or post questions.
Balourd. Was moonkin before it was cool.
Mim. Because one nature-damage-caster wasnt good enough. |
